Leh is a town located in the Ladakh union territory in northern India. Situated in the valley of the upper Indus River, Leh is nestled at an elevation of 11,550 feet (3,520 meters). The town is surrounded by the majestic peaks of the Ladakh Range, which is a southeastern extension of the Karakoram Range. Being in one of the most remote areas of the Indian-administered portion of the Kashmir region, Leh is considered one of the highest permanently inhabited towns in the world.
Originally, Leh was established as a terminus for caravans traveling from Asia. Today, it can be accessed primarily via the Treaty Road, the main highway that connects Leh to Srinagar in the west and to Dêmqog in Tibet, which is part of the Chinese-administered region of Kashmir, in the southeast. The town's economy relies primarily on trade, with agriculture, including fruit growing, also playing an important role.
Overlooking the town, you can find the old palace of the kings of Ladakh as well as the Sankar monastery. These landmarks add to the cultural and historical significance of Leh.
